“You Don’t Die for a Lie” A piece dedicated in honor of different Christian martyrs and saints from over the centuries. I have a deep love for the martyrs and more specially their stories, their undying faith even in the face of gruesome torture and death. The piece take inspiration from earlier Byzantine Christian iconography.

The Catholic saints in this piece include the following:

St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Lawerence, St. Stephen,

Sts. Perpetua & Felicity, St. Andrew,

St. Joan of Arc, St. Peter of Verona, St. Paul,

St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Lucy, St. Bartholomew, & St. Jose Sanchez del Rio

The Blood of the Martyrs is the Seeds of the Church

The second piece included in the “You Don’t Die for a Lie” series, is the following three part illustration titled, “The Blood of the Martyrs is the Seeds of the Church”. In this piece, I try to capture three common characteristics of the Christian martyrs. Firstly, their extreme trust and faith in the Lord, how they keep their eyes on Christ even during trials. Secondly, what makes them martyrs in the first place, gruesome death. Christians have been tortured and murdered in hundreds of ways over the centuries. But all willingly for their faith. The third characteristic, and title of thie piece, is phrase from the Christian theologian Tertullian, “The blood of the martyrs is the seeds of the church.” The more that the church is persecuted, the more it grows.
